Over the winter holiday, I experienced my first bridal shower! It was an exciting event because, as many guests commented to me, it makes everything very real when you begin receiving registry gifts! This first shower was thrown for me by my future mother-in-law and my fiance’s side of the family. One of the fun things for me to experience (other than family, gifts, and delicious food) was a minor difference in regional traditions. In the midwest, I’ve been familiar with collecting ribbons from unwrapped presents and forming a ribbon bouquet using a paper plate. In New Jersey, the ribbons were used for what looked like a “bouquet,” but I found out that I was supposed to put it on as a hat when I was finished with the gifts! I’ve also been used to joking with people about each broken ribbon symbolizing a child that the married couple will have (girls will go out of their way NOT to break ribbons, and relatives will go out of their way to tie ribbons VERY tightly), but here they were unfamiliar with that.
