~ Best date night, from the bride: ~
“One of our favorite date nights involved taking a drive down to the lakefront, pitching a blanked right at the water’s edge and enjoying a bottle of wine and dinner. It was right at sunset so you could see the color change in the sky and the lights slowly turn on in all of the buildings along the lake. It was the perfect way to enjoy a summer night together.”

~ The Proposal ~
Looking back, on an unseasonably warm day in Chicago in December, Kelly remembers being stressed. With dog sitting, moving, attending a 50th birthday party and playing two hockey games, Kelly wondered how she was going to juggle it all. To top it off, 5 minutes before arriving to the rink, she received three text messages from two players telling her they couldn’t make it to the game, including her now fiancé. A pipe had burst at his father’s house and he could no longer make it. On top of that, her goalie was running late.
“The remaining 30 minutes stayed just as stressful. I found myself reorganizing the lines and running back and forth between the rink and the locker room to check on my late goalie. Our goalie finally makes it out to the ice and I send out the first line of forwards and defensemen. My center drops to his knees and begins fixing his skate.
Yelling to me from the ice, “Kelly, I need a replacement, my skate is broken.” I look to my third line center and ask her if she wants to take his place on the first line. She declines and I move to replace him on the first line as a center. I position myself, head down, legs apart, moving my stick to fight for the puck that is now in the referees hands. The other center slowly skates up to center ice, drops his stick, gloves and rips off his helmet.
Confused and thinking that he wants to fight me, I glare upwards only to see my fiancé’s glowing face. I was confused as to why he was wearing the opponents jersey when he told me he wasn’t coming.
He grins, slowly dropping to one knee. Realizing what was going on, I glanced up to see both the opposing team and my team hitting their sticks on the ice in celebration of the moment. I realize that they had been in on the plan from the very beginning including the referees.
I hear the banging of 30 pairs of hands against the glass walls from our closest friends and his family. I see a professional photographer and the referee taping the moment with his iPhone. The stress of the moment, made me completely blind to the plan that was unfolding in front of me. Still confused, I struggled to pull my helmet off and barely hear the words, “will you be my wife?” The entire rink erupts with screams of joy as we embraced at center ice.”
Kelly says, “By most odds, I probably should never have met my fiancé. How often does a girl in her thirties from Hawaii, learn to play hockey as an adult and meet the man of her dreams?
Congratulations to this adorable hockey-loving duo tying the knot September 16, 2017!
