Set the Tone of Your Wedding with Music

music3.jpgMusic is an essential part of life as we know it and your wedding day is no exception. The type of music you choose to accompany the events of your special day will enhance the mood and, in the case of the reception, create a good time for all involved. That said, the music for the ceremony and the reception are often fairly different and many times dictated by the location of each.

Ceremony music is most times traditional. For formal church weddings, the church’s organist or musicians may play your music. Check with your pastor or wedding officiator for details and restrictions, if any, on your song choices. Ceremonies not held at a church generally require you to hire professionals who can help with your music selections. Be sure to include ceremony music in your music and entertainment budget. Professional musicians and vocalists set just the right tone for your ceremony.

Reception location also determines the type of music you will have. Sometimes there is only room for a DJ or a small quartet. Oftentimes, the music during the cocktail hour will be much different from that during dinner. Whether your music is made to order or prerecorded, make sure they will play your music when you want it. Coordination with your music is extremely important for a memorable, effortless wedding day. Musicians and DJs usually provide you with a song list for you to choose from. If they are serving as your Master of Ceremonies, provide them with a list of announcements and when you would like them, go over pronunciations of names and alert them to any strong likes or dislikes as to your music selections.

Music sets a mood so choose music that is a reflection of the atmosphere you’d like to have for your wedding. Bands provide the flavor of a live concert while interacting with you and your guests singing your favorites to you. They have the ability to read the crowd and even write/learn a specific song just for you.

DJs can provide versatility offering a wide song choice but don't provide the live performances.

Prices for the music you chose varies. Ceremony musicians typically charge about $250 or more an hour, less if they’re students. This is usually a per performer fee. Check on minimums and what they’ll charge if you need them to put in some overtime. DJs generally charge $900 to $2,500 for four to five hours. Discounts are often available for Friday and Sunday. Prices for bands depend on quality and size. Recommendations and references are a key point in choosing your music. The best way to find out whether the music is right for you is to go to another wedding and listen to the band or DJ live or view a video performance.
