Music & Entertainment

music5.jpgThose opening chords are universal. Nothing says ‘wedding’ like the first tones of “Here Comes The Bride.” Those familiar notes underscore the importance of music in your wedding plans. It is at the heart of your day.

Beginning Notes. Your first musical selection is simple. Live or recorded performances? Both have advantages, so your budget, situation and personal preference should make this a quick decision.
In general, DJs cost less and the songs they play sound exactly like you remember them. A DJ can also play any music you like—from classical to world beat to rock. He or she also doesn’t need much room, which could be a big consideration if your reception space is tight.

A live band adds elegance and sophistication to your wedding festivities. A band will cost more, but the price seems small when weighed against the intimate, refined ambience live music brings to your event. Think of the beautiful memories you’ll have of a stringed quartet or swing band playing your songs.

Each band interprets songs differently, so be certain to listen to a mini-concert on audio or DVD. Understand that live musicians may not know every song you like or play it exactly as you remember.

Ceremony. Many couples choose subtle ceremony music. After all, you’re the main attraction at this event. A single musician may be able to fulfill your requests, if cost is an issue. The prelude, or background music played while your guests are being seated, sets the mood for your ceremony. From there, your musical selections will likely include two solo performances, the processional, recessional and postlude.

For formal church weddings, the church’s organist or musicians may play your music. Ask if there are any restrictions on your song choices.
Ceremonies not held at a church generally require you to hire professionals, who can help with your music selections. Include ceremony music in your entertainment budget.

Cocktail/Dinner Hour. Celebrations demand special sounds, especially during the time between the ceremony and the reception. Hushed conversations and clinking glasses can create a somber mood. Add some light background music and the atmosphere is festive.

Choosing the music may seem intimidating. Don’t worry if you struggle to remember the titles of selections you like. Truthfully, your band or DJ will do nearly all the work for you.

Professionals don’t care if you can name the tune—or even hum it. Their job is defining the sounds you like and helping you find the pieces that reflect your tastes.

Reception. This is the easiest music to choose. Whether you love Brahms or the Beatles, reception music is all about songs that make your heart soar. The emphasis here is on entertaining your guests and putting a musical score to those all-important moments: your first dance, the cutting of the cake and the bouquet/garter toss.

Most couples choose to mix up their selections for slow and fast dancing. Consider the ages and tastes of your guests to get a variety that’s guaranteed to please all.
