From the bridal bouquet to rose petals at your feet, flowers play an essential role in your wedding day festivities. Whether your taste leans toward traditional white displays or cutting-edge colorful bouquets, the right designer can create floral confections that underscore your personal style.

Style permeates our world. It’s also part and parcel of your floral purchase. You aren’t just buying blooms, you’re purchasing a floral designer’s creativity and talent. Without those elements, a rose really is just a plant.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT FLOWERS: When you start selecting the flowers and foliage for your bouquets and floral arrangements, you should keep two things in mind. First of all, you’ll need to choose the right flowers for your bouquet style. Depending on the style of bouquet, certain flowers may not cooperate as well as others. For instance, lilies, hydrangeas, and long stemmed roses are great for presentation bouquets, but gerberas, sunflowers, and daisies are best for tightly bound bouquets. Second of all, you should consider your wedding date. Depending on the season, certain flowers may cost more than others. In fact, flowers tend to be significantly cheaper when they’re in season. To keep your floral budget down, and to get the best quality of flowers, you should try to choose flowers and foliage that will be in season for your wedding day. Here are some definitions of bouquet styles.

NOSEGAY:This classic bouquet is a small, round-shaped floral design, typically detailed with herbal foliage, and full of greenery

BIEDERMEIER: This bouquet is typically very tailored, with tightly structured blooms and intricate arrangements. These bouquets typically feature multiple layers of different flowers in different colors.

PRESENTATION: A chic presentation bouquet is a set of long stemmed flowers detailed with greenery. A bride will typically carry her presentation bouquet cradled in one arm, rather than with both hands.

COMPOSITE: A composite flower bouquet is a variation of the round nosegay bouquet, however it happens to be a bit more chic. Composed of hundreds of small petals wired together, this bouquet is designed to look like one large flower.

MUFF: A muff bouquet is a preferable choice for winter weddings, as it allows the bride to warm her hands inside a muff made of fur or other material rather than carry a traditional bouquet. Designed much like a large corsage, a muff bouquet should be fastened to the front of the bride’s muff.

SPARKLING WRAPS: For a touch of Old Hollywood glam, try adding some glitz to your bouquet wraps! If you like the idea of a sparkling bouquet, but you feel like rhinestones and crystals are somewhat outdated, play around with other materials. Attach a few antique chandelier beads to the bottom of your bouquet handle. It will add a bit of sparkle without compromising the design of your bouquet. Or, try using a glittered ribbon for your handle wrap. It will add a subtle but glamorous shimmer to your bouquet. You could also try a “tussy-mussy,” a small metal vase used by the French since the 18th century to hold the bride’s bouquet. Visit local antique shops for similar vases, or have your own custom one made!

RIBBONS AND BOWS: When you design your ribbon wrap, you may want to coordinate with your color scheme. Texture is another element to consider when choosing ribbons for your bouquet. Grosgrain, natural cottons, satins, and various patterns of lace can all add special accents to simple bouquets. Wide bows made of delicate fabrics can add a feminine softness to your bouquet, but angular or metallic bows can create a very contemporary and artistic look. Tulle can also be incorporated into your bouquet to match your veil. Your flowers may be soft and delicate, but you should feel free to experiment with textures, shapes, and materials to create interesting contrasts in your arrangements!

Floral Preservation

Flower5If you’ve chosen to have fresh flowers, you may wish you could keep your beautiful fragrant bouquet to enjoy for years to come. Today’s methods of freeze drying make that possible! Freeze drying floral preservation employs expensive equipment handled by trained professionals who understand how various kinds of flowers and greenery must be treated to retain their freshly picked color and look.

Prior to your wedding, you should meet with your preservation service to choose how you would like to have your flowers displayed. They can be made into a centerpiece, a floral picture for your wall or displayed under a dome. They will be enclosed in a glass or acrylic dome or frame to protect them from dust and humidity. This way, your arrangement can become a family heirloom to pass on.

Planning ahead to have your bouquet preserved involves a few steps. First explain to your florist that you plan to preserve the flowers and ask your florist not to use a non-wilting spray to protect your flowers. It may damage the flowers you intend to preserve. Second, delegate someone to take care of the details concerning preserving your bouquet following the reception or you may want to consider purchasing a replica bouquet.
