In the garden of gowns
As wedding traditions evolve with each new generation, and as fashion trends reinvent themselves every few months, it’s not surprising that many modern brides are looking for a new source of fashion guidance. Many women have trouble choosing the perfect wedding dress because they aren’t sure which trends to follow and which to avoid, which styles are appropriate and which are unnecessary, or
which traditions should be upheld and which should be ignored. As if having too many options could ever be a problem, many brides become overloaded with information pulling them in different directions. At one time, there were cultural norms and specified standards that dictated how a bride should dress, but in the modern era, it’s not always easy to differentiate between proper attire and outdated rules.
Just to be clear, any bride may wear a long, white gown. No matter how many times she’s walked down the aisle, no matter what her age, and no matter if she has children, any bride may don white on her wedding day. Colored dresses, trims, accents, ribbons, shoes, and jewels are very in right now. The white wedding dress may seem like the traditional color for the bride’s gown, but that tradition is fairly
young compared to centuries of cultural variations. Long trains are traditional for formal weddings, but many modern brides choose to crop the 50-foot train for easier mobility.
In all honesty, you shouldn’t worry about the ‘right’ trends or the ‘proper’ fashion standards, and you shouldn’t feel obligated to please anyone but yourself. Your wedding dress can be anything you want it to be, and you should love it and feel beautiful wearing it.
