Roselle and Ricardo were introduced in 1994 through a friend.
While the two immediately became pals, they didn’t become romantically involved until four years later. Their first date involved a getaway to Wisconsin with three other friends.
“After that weekend getaway in Wisconsin, Rick and I would page each other with silly things that then turned into flirting with each other,” says Roselle, a nurse. “As we found ourselves talking more, we realized that [our] feelings had developed into more than just friends.”
Although they definitely had a connection, it took the pair about 10 years to make it to the altar. Six months into their relationship, Ricardo, a heating and air conditioning technician, left for a two-month vacation in the Philippines. Proving absence truly makes the heart grow fonder, Roselle says their feelings were even stronger when he returned.
Over the years, Roselle and Ricardo continued to grow close, doing thoughtful things for one another, such as Roselle picking Ricardo up from his LASIK surgery. Lovingly described by Roselle as the “forgetful” member of the relationship, Ricardo made her laugh hysterically the time he got into the wrong car at a gas station. Ricardo was walking and reading a newspaper at the same time, so he hadn’t noticed the car wasn’t Roselle’s, but one that looked exactly like hers.
“He went into the passenger’s side, looked up from the newspaper and found a guy with his mouth open,” Roselle says. “Rick said quickly, ‘Oh sorry,’ and ran out of the car to get into my car. I was laughing so hard I couldn’t drive home.”
One afternoon, when Roselle came home from work, she found the place filled with both Ricardo’s family members and her own.
“I [saw] Rick with two dozen white roses in his hand,” Roselle says. “I knew what it was.”
Always a jokester, Ricardo had prepared for the moment by wearing a kneepad on his right knee.
“He got down on his right knee, pulled out a black box and opened it, saying, ‘Will you marry me?’ in front of my family and his,” Roselle says. “Of course, I said ‘Yes.’ |
